DVR – No More Video Rentals?

The latest offers from Dish Network and Directv® include a free DVR. Just in case you haven’t already heard about DVR technology, DVR stands for ‘Digital Video Recorder’ and the devices have become quite popular over the last couple of years.

Coupled with a programming package that includes premium channels such as HBO, Showtime, Starz, Cinemax, and others, you may find that video rentals are a thing of the past. If you are only interested in the newer movies then you can always take advantage of the ‘Pay per View’ options.

With a DVR you can have a virtual library of movies, as well as other types of programs, right at your fingertips and accessible with the touch of a button. A DVR will allow you to record hours of programming for later viewing. The free DVR’s that are currently part of the offers from Dish Network and Directv® allow you to record somewhere around 70 hours of programming. If you are interested in an upgraded version then you can get even more capacity.

A DVR is basically a type of media storage device. Like your personal computer, it includes a hard drive. This is where all of the programming is digitally stored. Some DVR’s are even considered to be ‘smart devices’. They can learn your programming preferences and then automatically record the types of programming that you watch the most. Another great feature that a DVR offers is the ability to pause, rewind, and then play live television programs. You can even replay scenes in slow motion.

Some people will never get use to the idea of skipping the local video rental store. They may miss the personal interaction with the clerks or they might just happen to like the scenery on the drive to the store. With the advent of the DVR, more and more people will decide to side step the whole video rental process. Video rental stores may want to take notice of this and possibly branch into another line of sales. In some cases you may notice that they are already doing this by offering more and more video game rentals. They have already started trying to make it easier to rent movies by doing so through the mail and by giving customers more time to keep the movies they rent. Eventually it will all come down to personal preference and if you take a long hard look at the DVR technology, you might find that your personal preference will be to go with this emerging technology.
