Satellite Television – A Consumer’s Perspective

The cable industry was greeted with open arms when it first led the American public on a journey through programming Pollyanna in the 1980’s. Unfortunately, not everyone in the United States was able to witness the powers of the cable TV companies. Cable was only available in select areas. If you didn’t live in the big cities then your chances of getting cable were severely diminished. These days cable has managed to expand to a great number of suburbs but there are still areas where the service remains unavailable.

Savvy marketing specialists and entrepreneurs soon realized that there was much money to be made in the broadcasting arena. A multitude of cable broadcasting companies emerged to take a piece of the pie. After the pie was fairly well devoured, there didn’t appear to be any more money to be made. Then along came the idea of satellite TV.

The number one draw for satellite TV was the fact that a huge segment of the American population was still underserved. People living in rural areas could not get cable television programming. If they wanted all that cable had to offer, they had to move to the city. Then along came satellite TV and turned that all around. Suddenly, digital television programming and hundreds of channels were made available to people who happened to live ‘out in the woods’.

These rural consumers were thrilled by the fact that they could now enjoy all of the benefits of cable television without actually having to live in the city. As the idea of satellite TV started to sink in among the general public, even people who lived in the city started to inquire about satellite TV services.

The cable television companies now had some competition. It was, and still is, difficult to compete with a service such as satellite TV. Satellite TV providers were able to offer more channels and an all-digital programming format. Then another development occurred which made it even more difficult for consumers to choose cable over satellite TV. There were now two satellite TV providers to choose from. This competition, a battle over consumers between Dish Network and Directv, led to even better satellite TV services and cheaper prices.

In today’s television programming world, consumers are faced with three choices. They can either choose cable, Dish Network or Directv. The majority of consumers are choosing the services of Dish Network. This is mainly due to the consensus that satellite TV is a better option than cable and also that Dish Network is a better option than Directv. It should be noted that in order to take advantage of the free satellite TV system offers from Dish Network or Directv, you need to be a new subscriber and you need to have a clear view of the southern sky from your installation location.
